Barbie was my entire childhood, and it has now conquered the world!
The pink-coded fantasy-comedy blockbuster astonishingly crushed expectations since its cinema release in July 2023. The movie’s pink-glamoured marketing months prior gave Barbie the biggest opening weekend of the year. The hype was also largely from social media with Barbenheimer going viral. The phenomenon urged audiences to watch Barbie and Christopher Nolan’s R-rated thriller Oppenheimer on the same day. The name came about when it was announced both movies would be released on the same day. Thousands of Barbenheimer memes flooded the internet, that the war (or alliance) between the two movies had fans in hot pink and orange and black cover every social media site. However, with the soar in promotions from moviegoers, Oppenheimer didn’t match what Barbie had to offer to break worldwide records.
Just less than three weeks after its release, Barbie made history and broke every movie Box Office record possible. Grossing a massive $1 billion in ticket sales globally, Barbie has marked major milestones making a legendary history in entertainment. Margot Robbie who stars as Barbie and served as a co-producer on the movie always knew Barbie would be a hit. In an early pitch meeting with the movie’s studio, Robbie predicted Barbie would be successful and make a billion dollars from noting on the achievement of Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park. At the time, Robbie thought she was overselling, but her visionary on the movie was right!
The most anticipated movie of the year is a win for Warner Bros as Barbie is their highest grossing global release of all time, beating a record set by the 2011 final Harry Potter movie. On Box Office Mojo, Barbie ranks first on the chart for 2023’s worldwide Box Office, and currently ranks 17th on the all-time worldwide charts, surpassing movies Jurassic Park, Frozen, Super Mario Bros, and the much-loved movie series finale Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2. In bigger news, Barbie director Greta Gerwig has been named as the first ever female to solo direct a one-billion-dollar movie.
Barbie’s megahit has fans wanting a sequel, however there has yet to be a confirmation from the team behind Barbie to move forward with a second movie. The success has Mattel, the toy company who owns Barbie, to make plans for more toy movies to be adapted on our screens. The company has confirmed 45 movies inspired by toy brands are in development, which 14 of them have officially been announced. This includes Hot Wheels, Matchbox, Polly Pocket, Barney, Thomas and Friends, Uno, and Magic 8 Ball.
The latest exciting Barbie update is the re-release of Barbie in IMAX cinemas that will be available for one week only. Personally selected by Gerwig, it features exclusive never-seen-before post-credit scenes on a supersized screen to experience the magic of Barbie’s enchantingly pink world again but better.
Barbie’s success these last few months has impacted me in ways that my younger self would love to witness; my childhood that is now a female leading movie taking over the entertainment industry and the world. I love the internet sometimes, and the Barbenheimer phenomenon has taken a hold on pop culture as I went through all the memes online and saved my favourite ones. I’m so excited for more adaptations of toy brand movies to come and hopefully hear news on a Barbie sequel as well! But for now, I’ll be watching Barbie in IMAX to experience more pink magic. What are your thoughts? Will you be watching Barbie in IMAX and help break more records?
